The secret to reliable leash manners isn't endless treats or sheer physical control—it's tapping into what your dog genuinely wants in the moment. When you turn the environment itself into the reward, polite walking becomes a game your dog actually wants to play.  

  • Alternate the pace: Keep walks engaging by constantly varying your speed—walk briskly, slow down, execute an about-turn, and practice quick transitions.  

  • Integrate quick sits: Pepper the walk with brief checkpoints: walk a few paces, cue a sit, take a few more paces, and sit again.  

  • Reward with "Go sniff": Instead of offering a dry biscuit, release your dog to explore the nearest scent post with an enthusiastic "Go sniff!" cue.
