Your Dog Doesn't Need 100 Friends

The unrealistic expectation setting reactive dogs up to fail—and a calmer path forward

Most owners believe their dog ought to be endlessly friendly and confident around every single person and dog they pass on the street. But hold that standard up to human behavior: are you outgoing, open, and confident around every stranger you see? Of course not.

Expecting a dog—especially one dealing with fear, stress, or reactivity—to love the whole world only sets them up for failure. You don’t need an extrovert who greets every passerby; you just need a dog that is comfortable in the presence of other dogs and the best way to achieve that is by forming a small circle of trusted companions to build genuine confidence.

The Power of a Core Social Group

Some dogs just need a little help from their friends

Instead of pushing an anxious or reactive dog into chaotic greetings, relieve the pressure by building a tight core social group from scratch.

  • Start with just one: Pair up with a single person or dog for daily on-leash walks. Forget forcing greetings or managing reactivity up close—simply walk parallel on opposite sides of the street.

  • Let time do the work: After a few weeks of consistent low-pressure exposure, tension fades. Within a month, dogs naturally drift into relaxed nose-to-nose or nose-to-butt greetings without fireworks.

  • Expand to a core group: Add a third buddy, then a fourth, aiming for a stable group of roughly five familiar dogs and people.

Once that core group is established, your dog's world opens back up. They can tackle intimidating environments—even places like dog parks—because they draw resilience and security directly from having their buddies at their side.

Social skills require practice. Make it a point to get together on a regular basis with your dog's social group so they remain confident and comfortable in the presence of other dogs. It's good for people too!
